These techniques have value, but they don\u2019t offer the intelligence or automation many organizations assume they\u2019re getting.<\/p>\n<p>In this blog, we&#8217;re touching base with our subject matter experts to draw a clear line between what\u2019s actually predictive and what\u2019s just marketed as such.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>The long history of non-AI predictive maintenance<\/h2>\n<p>Predictive maintenance didn\u2019t begin with artificial intelligence. As <a href=\"\/author\/mcooper\/\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"external-URL\">Mike Cooper<\/a><span class=\"sr-only\"> (opens in new tab)<\/span> highlights, <q>&#8220;for decades, maintenance teams have used tried-and-true methods to anticipate failures before they happen. AI is relatively new for maintenance teams; there are a lot of traditional forms of prediction that aren&#8217;t always talked about.&#8221;<\/q><\/p>\n<p>The traditional forms Mike mentions include:<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-flex\">\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/CB-monitoring-icon.png\" alt=\"Condition based icon\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong><span class=\"underline\">Condition-based<\/span> or threshold monitoring<\/strong> <br \/>This is when an alert is triggered for a variable like temperature or vibration that exceeds a predefined limit.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"blog-flex\">\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Statistical-trend-analysis-icon.png\" alt=\"Statistical trend icon\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Statistical trend analysis<\/strong> <br \/>This is when you are spotting anomalies by analyzing changes in equipment performance over time.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"blog-flex\">\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Physics-based-models-icon.png\" alt=\"Physics-based icon\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Physics-based models<\/strong> <br \/>An example of this is using mathematical models to simulate how and when components are likely to degrade.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"blog-flex\">\n<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/OEM-guidelines-icon.png\" alt=\"OEM guideline icon\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>OEM guidelines and lifecycle models<\/strong> <br \/>This is when you are estimating failure timelines based on historical data and manufacturer specs.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Each of these approaches laid the foundation for PdM, and they&#8217;re still being used today. Mike adds that <q>&#8220;the catch with these four approaches is that they&#8217;re not truly predictive in the ways AI can be, and that&#8217;s important for the users of a <a href=\"\/cmms\/\">CMMS<\/a> to understand.&#8221;<\/q><\/p>\n<h2>AI driven predictive maintenance isn&#8217;t what you think<\/h2>\n<p>After speaking with some of our industry experts, one thing has become abundantly clear: <strong>many CMMS providers are claiming predictive AI capabilities, but it&#8217;s mostly statistical or threshold-based logic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"section\">\n<p>What we see in the market is the bold claim that a CMMS has AI-driven predictive maintenance capabilities, and that&#8217;s simply not true.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Mike goes on to explain that true AI-driven PdM uses machine learning (ML) to identify certain patterns. For example, it can:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify failure patterns invisible to humans<\/li>\n<li>Improve predictions with every data point<\/li>\n<li>Recommend optimal maintenance timing based on real-world behavior and not just predefined rules<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><q>&#8220;When predictive maintenance is truly AI-enabled, it changes how teams think, work, and measure success. It doesn\u2019t just detect problems; it helps prevent them altogether, with fewer false alarms and more confident decision-making,&#8221;<\/q> says Mike.<\/p>\n<p>But what form can AI-enabled PdM take? What does it look like?<\/p>\n<p><q>&#8220;For one thing, AI-enabled means it can look at specific, measurable, machine details,&#8221;<\/q> Mike adds. For example, these can be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/maintenance-metrics\/remaining-useful-life\/\">Remaining useful life (RUL)<\/a>:<\/strong> Instead of guessing when an asset might fail, AI calculates how much time is left before a breakdown occurs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Failure rate:<\/strong> AI models continuously learn from operational data to estimate how often similar failures occur.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/maintenance-metrics\/mean-time-to-repair\/\">Mean time to repair (MTTR)<\/a>:<\/strong> With earlier warnings and clearer fault diagnostics, teams can reduce the time it takes to fix issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unplanned downtime reduction:<\/strong> AI helps maintenance teams prioritize interventions before failures happen, cutting costly disruptions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Condition indicators:<\/strong> By analyzing data like <a href=\"\/glossary\/what-is-vibration-analysis\/\">vibration<\/a>, temperature, and pressure, AI detects subtle shifts that precede failure, often weeks in advance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Non-AI vs. AI based PdM approaches<\/h2>\n<p>Below is a table that outlines the non-AI and AI based predictive maintenance approaches:<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Non-AI-and-AI-based-predictive-maintenance-approaches@2x-scaled.png\" alt=\"Non-AI and AI based predictive maintenance approaches\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Does predictive maintenance really work?<\/h2>\n<p>In short, yes. For industries like manufacturing, energy, and transportation, PdM can lead to thousands of dollars in savings and productivity gains.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some benefits of PdM include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimizing unplanned downtime<\/li>\n<li>Extending asset life<\/li>\n<li>Reducing maintenance costs<\/li>\n<li>Improving safety (e.g., preventing hazardous failures in critical systems)<\/li>\n<li>Increasing operational efficiency (e.g., keeps production lines running smoothly)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Not all predictive solutions are made the same<\/h2>\n<p>In an industry crowded with predictive claims, it\u2019s easy to assume all solutions offer similar value.
